The impact of social support towards adaptation success among urbanizing students in Jakarta: A study on university dormitory students in Jakarta
Keywords:
cross-cultural adaptation, social support, migrant studentsAbstract
Migrant students are facing challenges in adapting to the unique culture of Jakarta. Universities offer dormitory programs to facilitate migrant students in this adaptation process. The present study examined the role of social support to adaptation success of the migrant students. The study involved 105 students living in the dormitory of a public university. The study adopted the Cross-Cultural Adaptation Scale and Multi-dimensional Support Scale. Regression analysis showed that social support significantly contributed to the cross-cultural adaptation of migrant students in Jakarta. All sources of social support (support from family members, new friends in the place of study, and university) were significant predictors of adaptation success, except support from peers who were also migrant students. Furthermore, the university support has a significant but negative impact to students’ adaptation success. The research was conducted after the spike of COVID-19 pandemic, thus it might provide a unique nuance in interpreting the findings.
