Psychological dynamics of repentance process: Systematic literature review
Keywords:
psychological dynamics, repentance, repentance process, systematic literature reviewAbstract
The individual recovery process aimed at refraining from committing the same wrongdoing is referred to as the process of repentance. This process unfolds as an individual evaluates the consequences of their own actions as well as the reactions of others, leading to an awareness of the ramifications of their behavior. The objective of this study is to investigate the psychological dynamics involved in the process of repentance. A systematic literature review following PRISMA guideline was conducted on seven articles that met predefined criteria. The results indicate that the psychological dynamics at the inception of the repentance process broadly encompass the formation of intention and the emergence of repentant behavior. This process involves internal factors, such as self-evaluation and self-regulation, as well as external factors, such as social support. Individuals who successfully navigate the repentance process acknowledge remorse for their actions, which is then followed by several positive outcomes. Repentance can serve as a mechanism for abandoning past negative behaviors and progressing towards a more favourable future orientation.
